3. Data We Collect and How We Use It
We collect the following types of information, based on the legal grounds of providing our service (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR) and our legitimate interest in improving it (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
- Account Information: When you create an account, we collect your email address. We use this to identify you, secure your account, and allow you to sync your progress across devices.
- Learning & Usage Data: We collect data you generate while learning, such as your stroke practice drawings, voice recordings for pronunciation, journal entries, and your interactions with our Spaced Repetition System (SRS). This data is essential for the app's core function: to personalize your learning path, track your progress, and improve our learning models.
- Payment Information: We do not directly collect or store your financial details like credit card numbers. When you subscribe, you provide your payment information directly to our trusted third-party payment processors (Stripe for web, Apple for iOS, or Google for Android). We only receive a confirmation that a payment has occurred and data about your subscription status (e.g., active, expired).
- Technical Information: We process technical data, such as your IP address and device type, in our server logs. This is necessary for security (e.g., preventing abuse) and to ensure our service functions correctly. This data is stored temporarily and is not used to track you.
4. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We are committed to minimizing data sharing. We do not sell your personal data or share it for marketing purposes.
- Hosting Provider: Our application and your data are hosted on servers provided by Hetzner Online GmbH, located in Germany. Hetzner acts as our data processor and is bound by strict data protection agreements.
- Payment Processors: To handle subscriptions, we share necessary transaction data with Stripe, Apple, or Google, depending on your platform.
5. Your Rights Under GDPR
As a user, you have rights over your personal data:
- Right to Access: You can request a copy of the data we hold about you. Our app includes a feature to export your learning data in JSON format.
- Right to Rectification: You can correct any inaccurate personal data.
- Right to Erasure ("Right to be Forgotten"): You can request that we delete your personal data.
- Right to Object & Restrict Processing: You can object to our processing of your data or ask us to restrict it.

6. Data Security and Retention
We take the security of your data seriously. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3), and we use modern security practices to protect our self-hosted infrastructure. We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will permanently delete your data within a reasonable timeframe.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the service or by email, giving you a chance to review them.
